Two years ago we custom ordered a GMC acadia which arrived a month after the birth of our second child. Our previous vehicles was a supercharged Buick Regal, which was a great car, but was getting a bit aged and wasn't quite big enough for all the baby gear.

After two years we still love the Acadia and would buy it again in a heartbeat. It's comfortable, roomy, has fold down seats for carrying a lot of cargo, seats 7-8, and has a lot of luxury features you can add on. We got the entertainment package with the DVD player and screen, which both kids really love. It's a wonderful way to keep them entertained on longer road trips, although they would use it for short ones, too if we let them. Two wireless headphones keep the sound in the back so the adults can hear something else.

It drives nicely, is tall enough to see over most cars, gets pretty decent gas mileage (24-29 highway depending on conditions, 16 in town), and looks sharp. If we're out shopping and want to buy something big we no longer have to go home and get a truck, we can do it right away. We even stuffed a new front door into it, 80 inches tall by 36" wide new in the box with all that packing foam and everything. It had to go in at an angle, but it worked. You can't do that in a small car. It was amazing and just confirmed how versatile that vehicle really is.

Would I change anything? Yes. The middle row of seats aren't quite as comfortable as the driver and front passenger seats and it would be nice if they could lean backwards.

Everyone knows about the upcoming Chevrolet Volt, GM's plug-in electrified hybrid vehicle. General Motors has been beating the Volt drum steadily since the car was first announced in 2007, frequently updating the world as to what we can expect when this extended range model hits the market in late 2010.

Voltec Technology

The Volt represents the first of what GM has promised will be several models utilizing its lithium-ion technology, with several more models planned in the coming years. GM now calls this technology Voltec in a bid to clarify and streamline mention of its electrification plans. In short, Voltec represents vehicles incorporating li-ion battery technology, with a 40 mile pure electric range and more than 250 miles of additional range thanks to a supplementary 1.4L gas engine.

A concept of a second model, the Cadillac Converj, has already made its way around the auto show circuit, but GM has decided not to go ahead and produce the car. At this point, GM is concentrating on bringing its XTS to the market, a full-sized hybrid sedan slated to replace both the STS and CTS. The Converj, though attractive and well thought out, might also compete with the Cadillac CTS coupe, thus one possible reason why GM decided against producing the car.

New Models

An official decision from GM concerning additional Voltec models will likely follow the Chevy Volt's release, perhaps as early as Winter 2011 when the first Volts have had time to be in customer's hands. There are several places where Voltec would work across GM's four remaining brands, but since GM isn't saying I'm speculating and offering up the following possibilities:

Buick - Cadillac won't see the Converj, but that beautiful coupe could be the basis for the all new Buick Riviera. Buick needs a statement model; what better car to offer up than one that is forward thinking, yet so very attractive?

GMC - GMC is making do with its Terrain and Acadia crossovers, but why not supplement these two models with a third crossover? A Voltec crossover model has long been rumored and GMC is a natural fit. Of course, that means Chevrolet will probably get its own copy as badge engineering between the two brands remains popular.

Cadillac - The Converj is gone, but a compact Cadillac sedan will eventually slot below the CTS. Why not make it a Voltec model and why not develop a well appointed luxury sedan? Don't get me started speculating about a Cadillac Voltec roadster!

When will these new models arrive? Expect that by model year 2015, each GM division to offer Voltec technology. How it looks and whether a minivan or pickup truck might be included in the mix remains to be s

When it comes to driving classy cars GMC has always delivered. Take the GMC Yukon for example, how many different Hollywood action shows use this glamour car as the center theme. How many shows involve a high speed chase with a black Yukon vehicle that cruises around like a tank? Think of how the FBI gets around, they use these Yukons' for everything that they do. The Yukon is the alpha of all cars and has clearly showed its masculine prowess by its high performance vortec engine. This vehicle has been the man machine for the last ten years.

GMC has always dominated the SUV market with its high performance V8 engines that seem to destroy their competition. These V8 engines seem to give men the freedom and ambition they need to conquer the world around them. These vehicles are great for all seasons making it a very versatile car with many capabilities. Do you like skiing? No problem with this bad boy as it has all of the latest anti-slip four wheel drive components to get you to any ski slope around the country. Like boating? Even better, as you can tow the fastest hottest wake board boats in existence, to any of the thousands of lakes across the United States. These trucks in disguise can tow and pull whatever you want, taking you to wherever you want, when you want, as fast as you want, and that's tough to beat.

So is it just the masculine appeal that drives the sales for these massive vehicles? Or is there more to these man tanks that make them so popular? The answer lies in the size and comfort of these huge beasts. Men love them because they can do what they love best with the cars, but they also like them because they help transport there family around with ease. These GMC's are great for lugging the kids around to their many activities and sports throughout the week making moms job much easier. Even if it's snowing outside and your need to go shopping with your kids that's ok, just load them up throw in the four wheel drive and go have a blast.

So when everything is said and done these vehicles get you where you want to go, when you want to be there. And on top of all that they keep the family safe and help mom get all of her errands done. What could be better about a vehicle that offers so much? And that's why GMC's will continue to reign supreme in the world of cars.

With the Frankfurt motor show's press days underway, Audi revealed a technical study that examines what its R8 sports car might be like if powered by four powerful electric motors. The answer is E-Tron. The four motors fitted under the hood produce a modest 313 horse power but an astronomical 3,319 pound-feet of torque. Isn't it amazing!

The total torque produced does not come at once. Such a quantity of twisting force usually found in the M47 Patton tank would turn all the tires into rubber vapor at the first throttle. The E-Tron is equipped with an electronic version of torque-vectoring system that is found in some of the Audi cars which are already on the road. This electronic version distributes the required torque to each wheel as needed to maximize traction the cornering ability. As Audi says it takes 4.8 seconds to get to 100 Km/h (62 Mph) from 0. This may not be termed as spectacular when compared with other super-cars. But once the rolling sets to go, the plot quickens - 37 Mph to 75 Mph in just 4.1 seconds, the extra torque stepping into defeat the mountain forces of friction and the resistance by wind.

Top speed has been clocked for 127 miles per hour. This may not be of much service when it comes to long trips, considering its range of 154 miles. The total energy content of the liquid-cooled batteries is roughly 53 kilowatt hours, with a usable portion restricted to 42.4 kilowatt hour, to increase the life of battery service. The weight distribution was managed properly and is very close to that of a gasoline powered R8. The heavy battery pack has been mounted behind the passenger cabin to optimize the center of gravity and axle load distribution, giving the car a front/rear weight loading of 42/58. A specialized thermal management system has been installed which controls the temperature of the driving system, power electronics, battery and the interior climatic control. A heat pump is also installed to warm up the interior in case of unavailability of waste heat from the electrical system.

The Audi E-Tron concept's interior takes advantage of the lack of a traditional drive train encroaching on space; designers created a slim center tunnel and console with a flush gear selector
The Audi R8 E-Tron also communicates with its surroundings. Yes, that's right. E-Tron showcases of something Audi calls as "Car-to-x-communication". It's a prototype for an information-processing system that networks the E-Tron to other cars and its surroundings by way of transmitting devices. Such a system can help reduce accidents, minimize roadway congestion and open up new convenience functions like finding a parking space in a crowded parking lot. Like most concept cars, Audi has no plans to build the E-Tron as on a whole, say a competitor to the Tesla Roadster, though expect to see some of the technology and design cues show up in other vehicles. The parking system would be the hottest feature.

Among the many high performance car brands Audi has been a favourite amongst many enthusiasts for the past few years, popular models such as the A3 and the TT Roadster have been subject to all manner of interesting and powerful upgrades to increase the power of the car and quench the thirst for speed.

Newer models recently on the market like the RS6 and the R8 (recently featuring in the hit movie Ironman) have re-ignited the interest of petrol heads everywhere. The best part of performance tuning Audi cars is that you are able to tune up almost any car from the current range whether it's the family saloon A4 or the already beefy hot hatches like the RS range.

Performance tuning Audi best suits models like Quattros, Turbo diesels and supercharged models, once you've decided what car you are going to modify you're spoilt for choice when it comes to what parts to replace or alter.

Whether you are looking to improve the handling with a new Limited Slip-Diff or you are craving an extra few horses under the bonnet you could perform an upgrade with a number of Audi Tuning Parts such as new ECU or forced induction from Turbo systems.

But car tuning isn't all about power and performance, whilst it's still a very important part of it, the visual appearance of your car needs to match the cool things that it can do on the road or a race track. Aside from custom paint jobs and graphics applied to the side and bonnets of your car many Audi Tuning companies will lower your car's suspension to create a sleeker appearance - just make sure you take it easy going over speed bumps!

Other modifications you can make include weight reduction; there are a number of ways to make your Audi lighter and a lot of it involves utilising carbon fibre: the versatile compound that can be made into anything from wing mirrors to custom bonnets. Carbon fibre door inserts can help bring the weight of your car's doors down to racing specification if you were to go as far to remove most of your interior upholstery.

Obviously that's the high end of the scale, not all of us want to sacrifice the luxury for speed but that's the beauty of Audi tuning you can choose to upgrade one or a few elements and you'll potentially increase your car's power or fuel economy, sometime even both! There are many resources on the internet and also dedicated performance stores who can advise you further on how to improve your Audi no matter how much you are wishing to spend.

Audi, as part of the Volkswagen Group, wasn't always known for their sports cars. Most Audis are sleek, stylish and fast, but they never really stacked up against legitimate sports cars like models from Ferrari and Porsche. All of this changed in 2006 with Audi's introduction of the R8 V10 road car.

The R8 V10 road car wasn't exactly a new design idea by Audi. In fact, the R8 was nearly a decade old by the time Audi decided it should be produced for basic road ownership. There were two models of Audi R8 built in 1999 for the 24-hour Le Mans, the R8R and R8C. There was also the Audi R8 racecar built in 2000, and there's an Audi R8 Le Mans Concept 12-cylinder diesel in the works.

Audi announced its plans to transform the R8 into a V10 road car in 2005 and had planned on it being available by 2007. The idea was to create something unique and original while not completely abandoning the R8 concept that made Audi's racecars so successful. The production went to one of Audi's subsidiaries, quattro GmbH.

The end result of quattro's involvement was a mid-sized, 2-seater sports coupe with a longitudinally-mounted mid-engine and the patented permanent four-wheel drive system. The R8 is said to be very similar to the Gallardo from Lamborghini, and the V10 engine it uses certainly earns it a top slot in the high performance category.

There have since been other versions of the R8, including the R8 Spider and a V8 version of the automobile. The original R8 V10 by Audi was available in most locations around the globe by the end of 2008, and the car is still in production today.

The similarities found between the R8 V10 and the Lamborghini Gallardo models are present for a reason - Audi AG owns Lamborghini. So they decided to use some of the same parts and design features, including the chassis, floorpan, transmission and the large, powerful engine.

Audi's R8 V10 is also unique in many aspects. The body's aluminum-composite construction is a newer material that provides the ultimate strength with a lighter weight than most other carbon materials. There's also a thorough safety feature on board, called the Bosch ESP 8.0 Electronic Stability Programme. This includes ABS, distribution, regulation, differential and airbag features.

For most car enthusiasts, Audi's R8 is just another in a long line of sleek-looking sports cars without the powerhouse V10 engine. The V10 is basically the same engine used in the super-fast Lamborghini, only with a few improvements.

Audi's R8 V10 uses a 5.2 liter FSI internal combustion engine. It can reach a top speed (electronically controlled) of 200 MPH and can reach 60 MPH in only 3.9 seconds. The V10 produces 516 horsepower and, overall, the R8 costs around $146,000 USD.

Maruti Alto is a subcompact 5 door hatchback. It is an Indian version of the more widely recognized Suzuki Alto. Since its launch in 2000, Maruti Alto has set records by selling more than 2 million vehicles in a single fiscal year. Perhaps, its fame to top is a direct result of low price and high fuel efficiency. Interestingly, it is also one of those few vehicles whose price has dropped in recent years. Such price reductions are mainly attributed to lowering of sales duty and government incentives.

Models

The 800cc car is tailor-made for Indian market to accommodate their simple lifestyle. Its engine is able to generate enough power to attain top speed of 137km/h in just over 20 seconds. Noticeably, the most basic model does not have AC and cost little less than other upgraded variants, LX and LXi. In contrast, the most popular model LX includes a powerful AC and fabric leather seats whereas LXi comes equipped with power steering. The growing popularity of Maruti Alto is evident by its success in European markets. The VXi model is specifically produced to meet the growing needs of East European block where its 1061cc engine comes with 5 speed manual transmission.

Features

The second generation Maruti Alto is similar to Suzuki Alto and is based on Suzuki A-Star Concept global car. The new Maruti Alto is fully loaded with features such as power windows, central lock, ABS, rear wiper, fog lamps, CD player and airbags. It is also claimed as India's most fuel efficient cars which can cover 19.73 miles per liter. An intelligent drive assist power steering offers low turning radius making it easier to turn and park in congested space.

Safety

New advanced technology also includes booster assisted brakes for shorter braking distance and the revolutionary collapsible steering column for avoiding injury to drivers. These safety features are enhanced by iCATS security system. Standard safety features also include side-impact beams, tubeless tires, clear lens lamps and high mount stop lamp. Due to its low cost of maintenance and spare Maruti Alto is well set to make inroads in a fast growing middle class Indian economy which will need a vehicle like Maruti to match their lifestyle.

What kind of car do you drive? Certain manufacturers may not be around in a few months and unless you want your car to be a thing of the past, then you might want to get an Audi.

Audi is a German automaker which makes cars that include but are not limited to: the A4, the A6, and the RS. The name comes from the Latin word for Hark. The brand is symbolized by a logo that consists of four overlapping rings (similar to the Olympics but without the fifth ring). The logo is a representation of the merger of four automobile makers from the 1930s (Audi, Horch, DKW, and Wanderer). Together they formed something called Auto Union and the logo came about shortly after.

Today, Audi cars can be bought from dealers that are all over the world. The A4 and A6 are more accessible than the RS because the RS is higher-end vehicle (higher than the already high-end Audi S). The A4 and A6 are more compact Sedan-types and not as luxurious.

But, a simple history lesson is not enough to convince the savvy consumer that they should purchase an Audi auto. So what is? How about a rundown of the cars listed, starting with the A4.

The Audi A4
The A4 is classified as a compact executive car. This is fancy European jargon for a small luxury type vehicle. This car began production in 1994 and is currently still in production today. It comes in a sedan version or a wagon version and features front wheel drive or four wheel drive. The car can come equipped with a V8 engine as well.

The Audi A6
The A6 is the next step up from the A4. It is classified as an executive car, meaning it is larger than a family sized car would be. It also comes in both sedan and wagon version (saloon and estate types). It also began production in 1994 and features 4 or 5 doors, front wheel drive, and four wheel drive.

The 2005 model won an award for World Car of the Year.

The Audi RS
The RS is manufactured by a division called Audi AG. They are made specifically to be luxurious, enhanced sport vehicles. The higher powered cars come with all the features of other Audis, but also an additional convertible form.

And these RS types can look really cool, especially the higher tier ones. It is as if you are looking at a car you would see James Bond driving (and that pretty good considering he only drives the best).

But, that is just a brief overview of those particular cars. In order to get the full feel and information (specs too) one would have find their local Audi dealer and test drive a car. Afterwards you will actually want to answer me the next time I ask, What kind of car do you drive? Because you will be driving an Audi automobile. Cheers.

There have been many big players in the 7 seater cars section and there are already numerous cars in the market that fall in the category of 7 seater suv and 7 seater cars as such. In 2006 Audi decided to enter this arena with the launch of its first ever 7 seater car; the Audi Q7, which happens to be a crossover luxurious SUV during the Auto Show in Los Angeles and it is built on the famous Volkswagen Group PL71 platform. Presently the latest version of the Audi Q series happens to be the Audi Q5. Q5 was recently showcased in 2010. The SUVs are supposed to be importantly for the off road travels, but it seems based on the Audi's concept car, the Pikes Peak Quattro; Audi has designed the Q7 keeping in mind the on road features than the off road ones. Even though the Audi Q7 features the four wheel drive system coupled with the CDL (central differential lock), and the air suspension system whose height is adjustable, it is unable to compete the cars in the SUV segment which are manufactured mainly for the off-road purposes.

Safety Features Kept Safe

Audi has introduced a new level of safety in its Q7 car. Among all other 7 seater cars out there, it seems no other car is able to beat Audi's Q7 safety features. In America, NHTSA rated a total of 5 out of 5 for side and front impact tests in fourteen categories. And it has to be that way, because Audi Q7 features Electronic Stability Programme and variety of safety electronics combined with the numerous airbags to protect the passengers. Although in America this car received good ratings, in Europe, the NCAP rated 4 out of 5 for safety, and Audi claims that it was a design error which has been fixed in the later car releases. Many other tests have been conducted on Audi Q7 and the testers have found that Audi has implemented many innovative ways to protect the passengers sitting within.

Q7 Variants for North America

North America got a good set of Q7 variants to drive. The first one was the Audi Q7 hybrid which is basically a hybrid car that is built upon the Q7 and features an electric motor along with a 4.2 FSI engine; which is able to output a torque of more than 200Nm. This particular hybrid is powered by a battery of Nickel-Metal Hydride and this system pushes the car to an acceleration of 0 to 100 km per hour within 6.8 seconds. But this hybrid is comparatively heavier when compared to the petrol version of the Q7. Audi has actually announced that it would be rolling out even more hybrids but the number would be limited. As of now, Audi seems to be focussed on development of Q5 hybrids that will feature the Lithium-Ion battery.

Do used Audis make good second vehicles or good used vehicles? The answer is yes and the reason is because these vehicles are taken care of by their owners. Audis are known as luxury automobies and the owners of these vehicles tend to care a lot about their vehicles, which means that they do not drive them a lot and maintain the auto very well. During times of financial turmoil, there are hope for many who have endured the recession and have money to purchase a vehicle.

Plus, your car will be treated just like a brand new car and will get the same service that can be expected from any Audi car.

Audi has epitomized German excellent engineering for years since its inception. Nonetheless, it was not till lately, in 2006, that Audi as a company began venturing into the American market. These compact automobiles have been previously confined to the European market only. The reasoning behind this was worry of disinterest among the American populace. This was partly fuelled by the fact that Americans did not present much enthusiasm in compact automobiles with high gas efficiency. Americans now have the chance to take pleasure in German engineering at its best. What with affordable price tag, excellent gas economy and luxurious cabins. The 2011 Audi A3 affords an ideal alternative to all of the gas guzzlers currently patronizing the roads.

The exterior and the interior in true Audi style are spruced up in a very tasty and stylish manner. They earn high marks, as their development is characteristic of all Audi fashions i.e. no spare in costs. Details have been tremendously considered. The Audi A3 convertible has the signature of the Audi brand accomplished in metal on the dash, which has all of the controls. It also boasts of the newest wireless Bluetooth technology and a high quality navigation system. This convertible edition is definitely a tad lower in value as in comparison with the elegant Audi lineup. This did not by any means compromise on the traditional roomy interior. The area although, might be a bit cramped. Nonetheless, it's no shock because the Audi A3 is a hatchback.

The Audi convertible A3 has a wide range of choices below its hood. In reality, things get fairly interesting. The 2.0 L is the preferred engine choice. This engine is a turbocharged diesel engine that spews out 140 HP. Nonetheless, there is the 2.0L gasoline or petrol powered engine with a 200HP output, which is primarily expected to be a favourite with the Americans. It comes with the choices of a front-wheel pull car which goes for rather less and the relatively new Audi all wheel drive/pull suspension. The front wheel drive Audi A3 comes in a six-speed non-auto transmission and an S-Tronic automatic transmission. The all wheel drive is simply available with an S-Tronic automatic transmission.

Naturally, the subsequent query would have something to do with the price. A brand new Audi A3 costs round about $30,000. That is with out extras like heated seats, high performance stereo system among others. That is justified for a splendid hatchback that boasts of 30MPG or thereabout. The alternative to this for those who think about it as slightly bit steep is to get a used Audi A3, which will of course need to have been from around 2006 or thereabout. It is because prior to 2006, the elegant Audi A3 did not exist. A used A3 will go for around $15,000, which is virtually half value of a brand new A3. Not a bad deal considering it should have clocked in excess of 35,000 to 40,000 miles. Go ahead, get your self an Audi A3, and join the 1000's of drivers who've come to understand German Engineering all through the years.

Vehicle insurance is one of the easiest forms of insurance to understand. Every driver in the United States must have an automobile insurance cover, so understanding how it works is really important. The premiums you pay are based on the risk level you present to your insurance company, the costs your insurance company will incur to conduct this business with you and the total amount of money that your insurance company believes it will need to pay all claims during the year.

Learn about the deal you are purchasing since this is your best protection against being under covered by your car insurance company. You might want to ask why insurance rates differ so much when comparing from one provider to another? Rates are set independently and this creates the wide difference in the rates you get from different car insurance companies on the same cover service. At this point, you are advised to get as many free car insurance quotes and compare them before buying any contract from any provider.

Take note of these tips if you want to lower your auto insurance rates: Engagement in disciplined and safer driving, Apply for high deductibles and take care of some little costs from your pocket, Cut off unnecessary coverage, understanding your car's age and condition, Go for group rates by participating through your employer, credit unions and other associations. You are advised to deal with leading automobile cover providers and their agents online; a sure way to enjoy high class service at a cheap price. Start by studying free quotes from leading providers of vehicle insurance online.

Purchasing a performance car is beneficial. Not only can the driver enjoy its rugged power and performance, he can also take advantage of its capacity and endurance. Some performance car aficionados describe it as getting the best of two worlds.

However, when it comes to driving the car on public roads, it may seem constricting. The fact is there is no safe way to open it up. Racers and drivers alike wanted to express their passion and to some extent outrage, to drive fast and enraged. Good thing there is now a place to race safely and legally - no worries about speedometer and odometer yelling your reading.

Earlier, Ford Racing Performance Group (FRPG) has ventured with the National Auto Sports Association (NASA) to create the much-concluded Ford Focus Spec racing class. Among the regions that participated in said racing class include Arizona, northern California, southern California, Mid-Atlantic, Northeast, Florida, Ohio-Indiana, Southeast, Midwest, Texas, and Rocky Mountain.

"The Focus Spec class is designed to showcase Focus performance parts and to provide an entry-level competitive racing environment that is affordable," said FRPG Focus Program Manager Andy Slankard. "I was the program manager on the 2002 SVT Focus. Since our first prototypes on the program, the racers on our team always wished we could have 20 SVT Foci on the track at the same time. Now that can happen. Focus is very fun and forgiving to drive at the limit."

For four years in a row, Focus won Car and Driver's 10 Best awards. The award is attributed to vehicle's world-class dynamics, sophisticated Ford Focus performance parts, and fun to drive nature. The automaker reported over 2 million Focus sales in the United States. From this number, plenty are used in racing competitions.

The mentioned class is open to all trim levels and model years of Ford Focus including the SVT Focus and 2.3-liter engine equipped vehicles. The race series of the car is designed to highlight the high-performance potential behind the Ford Focus platform. This is basically because car performance parts of the vehicle are modified when it is to be used for racing purposes. Performance parts include suspension, brakes, engine, tires and wheels.

Slankard also noted that Focus race cars are very durable and easy to drive at the limit. "The competition has been very close - fender to fender - and drivers with skill are prevailing. It will take a while to gain some traction, but the series is growing."

"We wanted to be involved in Focus motorsports at the racer's level, similar to what we had accomplished with the FR500C," said Jamie Allison, Ford Racing Performance Group manager. "NASA was able to provide us the ideal venue to showcase the inherent racing capability of the Focus and allow us to showcase performance parts offerings."

The Ford Focus is ready to race prices ranges from $6,000 to $10,000. Parts allowances and restrictions equalize the field based on different model combinations. After experiencing Focus, enthusiasts are now recommending it to get the best out of auto industries varied worlds.

Hannah Racey is a 35 year old native of Chicago, Ill. She has been a car afficionado since she can remember. She now works for an automotive company based in Detroit, Mi. as a consultant. You can visit car performance parts [http://www.usedpartslive.com/manufacturers] for more

If you own a Power Boat and want to experience a rush of adrenaline, check out Power Boat racing. You would find a host of venues, racing circuits, boat classes and racing levels - to suit your racing admiration levels. Power Boat racing is very much like car racing, with several variants. The different kinds of races are offshore racing, Time Trials, Classics, Regetta and yearly racing events in Canada, United States and some parts of United Kingdom and the country of Eurasia.

Primarily, Power Boat racing are of two types, namely, Inboard and Outboard. The names are indicative of the type and location of a Power Boat's engine. Races are held separately for each of the type of Power Boats. There are associations that govern the two kinds of Boat races. Founded in 1913, The American Power Boat Association, called APBA, governs the Inboard Power Boat racing, besides also being associated with Outboard groups and clubs.

The APBA has a membership of 6000, a number which is growing. It is also affiliated, or even loosely associated, with Boat organizations in Australia and in New Zealand. The APBA has made divisions across the country, splitting it into regions for better administration. The Seattle Outboard Assocation (SOA), an association specializing in Outboard classes such as Stock Outboard, Professional Racing, Modified Outboard and Electric Outboard, is affiliated to the APBA.

Power Boat Races - Where, How And When Are Power Boat Races Held?

The associations conduct the races for different classes. These include "flyers" or Crackerbox, "runabout" the oldest in Inboard class, the rum running boats - Jersey Speed Skiff, Pro Stock Runabouts, National Modified and Super Stock. Power Boats, depending on the type and class, may reach speeds in excess of 170 Mph.

These racing events are held by the schedule of APBA, from March to November, with exciting names such as "Thunder On The Niagara", which is a racing event held in the county of Tonawanda, in New York, or even the "Annual Run for Records", which takes place in Yelm, Washington State. The APBA conducts over 200 authorised regattas every year in Canada and United States. The APBA is partnered in Canada by Canadian Boating Federation (CBF).

Interest in Power Boat Racing has been ever increasing over the years, with its popularity spreading into several circuits and Team Sponsored racing events. The other racing associations are the CBE, SOA, the Power Boat Association of Australia, Jersey Speed Skiffs and the Super Stock Association. Along with these clubs is the APBA which also directs the clubs, schedules and organizes events at various levels, classify or create the different classes. The APBA aims at providing the most visually spectacular event, with more thrills for the racers too.

Working with the APBA are numerous Power Boat racing clubs, associations, teams and, of course, the fans of Power Boat racing in the countries of United States, Canada and the rest of the World.

I often field questions regarding the various types of automotive paint available and what types are best. There's no one answer that covers every situation rather answers or suggestions that are dependent on each situation in a refinishing job. There are many factors that go into choosing which is the best type of paint for your needs but final appearance, ease of use, cost, and durability are the biggest factors most consider. If we focus on these considerations and walk you through the process hopefully we will have helped you make the right decision for your situation.

To Prime or Not to Prime?

The short answer to this question is always use the proper primer system whenever you can afford to do so. Most car owners are unaware of the process of finishing a car to a "class A" finish. The first step to ensuring a quality paint job that lasts is the proper selection and use of a primer. Primer is a broad category encompassing anti-corrosive primers which prevent metal surfaces from corroding, primer surfacers which fill small dings, dents and scratches, primer sealers which seal off undercoats in preparation for applying color coats, and adhesion primers whose primary function is to ensure adhesion to a particular surface. This may seem overwhelming to the beginner but bear in mind that not all of those types of primers are always required and many primer products will function in multiple roles. We'll give more detail on which primers are best in our next section. If you are on a really tight budget and your paint is in pretty good condition (no cracking, peeling, severe gloss loss, fading etc) then primer may not be necessary. However, you should check with the manufacturer of the paint brand you select to confirm they recommend use without a primer.

What kind of primer should I buy?

As we discussed in the previous section there are a lot of primer options available. Choosing the right primer is depends on the condition of your vehicle but we'll do our best to distill it down to a few of the best options. If you have any bare metal on your vehicle we strongly recommend a 2K (2 part) epoxy primer. Epoxy primer is the best for adhesion to metal and providing corrosion resistance. It's likely you don't have bare metal on your car to begin with but part of the refinishing process typically would involve sanding areas smooth and applying body filler as needed which will likely expose some bare metal. Often only a quart or two is needed to spot prime areas where bare metal is exposed. However, serious restoration projects often involve priming the entire vehicle with epoxy primer as added insurance for corrosion resistance and adhesion. On areas where there is a lot of small dings, scratches or body filler it's a good idea to use a 2K (two part) urethane primer surfacer. Urethane primers typically offer better filling and sanding than epoxy primer so a combination of epoxy primer for the adhesion and corrosion to metal followed by a good urethane primer for filling and sanding is the perfect "one two punch" for preparing your vehicle for painting. If your vehicle is in pretty good shape already, (meaning it doesn't have a lot of dings, scratches, flaking etc), a 2K urethane sealer is a great option for providing a good foundation for your color coats. Some paint manufacturers offer urethane sealer in a wide range of colors so you can match the color of your primer closer to the color of your final finish. Matching the color of your primer closer to the color of your final finish reduces the amount of color coats (usually the most expensive part) needed and when those inevitable stone chips or scratches happen they are less visible over a color keyed primer than over just a typical grey primer in most cases. For primer selection we generally recommend avoiding lacquer type primers, aerosol or spray bomb primers, and enamel primers due to potential issues with recoatability, and durability long term.

What kind of color coat should I use?

There are a lot of color coat options available to auto paint refinishers today with varying performance and costs. Knowing the durability, appearance performance, and general cost of these various types of product I would highly recommend either purchasing a 2K (2 part) urethane single stage topcoat or, preferentially, a urethane basecoat/clearcoat system. A urethane single stage is a product that provides both the color of your finish and the gloss sheen in one product while a basecoat/clearcoat system consists of a color layer (the basecoat) and an additional layer (called clearcoat) to provide the final gloss appearance. It may appear the urethane single stage is the obvious route because it requires only one product to achieve both gloss and color, however, despite the added cost and extra steps, a vast majority of all cars rolling off assembly lines today are painted with a basecoat/clearcoat process. Basecoat/Clearcoat offers enhanced metallic and pearlescent application and effect and generally last longer than single stage finishes. Early in the finish life cycle basecoat/clearcoat and single stage finishes may have similar appearance but as time goes on the basecoat/clearcoat finish will require less maintenance (ie waxing and detailing) to maintain the high gloss finish. Costs are higher for a base/clear system versus a single stage system but the overall service life improvements will reduce maintenance cost and likely preserve a greater resale value for your vehicle. Savvy shoppers are finding deals online for basecoar/clearcoat kits that are comparable or even less in cost than many single stage finishes.

http://cdn0.mattters.com/photos/photos/1041428/mercedes-g-class-by-_460x0w.jpgIn OOP (object oriented programming) it's important to remember why you are building an application with objects instead of mere functions (procedural programming). Sometimes programmers will treat objects more like functions which completely defeats the purpose of objects in the first place! The purpose of this post is to explore the real benefit of OOP and how to structure your models appropriately.

What is a decoupled object?

Contrary to the novice OOP programmer's belief, an object is much more than a collection of data members and related methods. It's important to remember that an object embodies data and methods that pertain only to itself. The term "decoupling" is used to identify the separation of software blocks that shouldn't depend on each other.

Why is it important to decouple objects?

Let's say that we have a Car Class with the methods driveForward(), stop(), turn(), honkHorn(), and changeLanes(). This object has a poor design because one of the methods, changeLanes(), might depend on a Street class. What if you were trying to reuse this class for a car that only drives off-road? In this case, the changeLanes() method is completely meaningless to your object instantiation. Furthermore, if the turn() method were to reference the changeLanes() method, the entire object would start to seem too specific to instantiate and work with an off-road car. In addition, if a change is made to the Street class, it's very likely that the Car class will also have to be modified. Since Car has a method that depends on another object, this object is said to be "coupled" (which is what we are trying to avoid).

How to decouple objects

To create what I call "purified objects", we need to completely decouple them in such a way that all of their fields and methods are specific to what the object can do in any circumstance. To decouple the Car class, you would want to move the changeLanes() method to another object that interacts with Car, like CityDriving. This new object acts as a mediator because it uses the Car class for special circumstances without tainting its pure definition.

When designing your object models, ask yourself "are these objects purified? Are they decoupled?" If you religiously ask yourself this question when creating new objects, not only will you end up creating much cleaner code, you'll also spend less time re-factoring. Good luck!

Racing cars is a very fun and enjoyable hobby, but unfortunately racing is not at all cheap. However for those who are looking to get in on some racing action with a limited budget there are plenty of racing series our there just for you. One way to go wheel to wheel and actually have a decent shot on a level playing field is spec class racing.

Spec racing is essentially where drivers race very similar cars (usually the same model) and are very limited to the amount of mods they can perform. These cars are usually fairly close to stock especially when it comes to engine mods, which for the beginner is good because when learning how to race having just enough horsepower is one of the best ways to be able to easily push a car to its limits and really learn some driving fundamentals. Not to mention the fact that heavily modded engines that can take a full days abuse at the track are going to cost a boat load of cash.

The reason Spec classes are so great for beginners is that the series themselves are designed to allow every one to be able to compete on a level playing field and focus on driver skill rather than who has the best parts budget. Although there is still often times some room for modification and those that are really in it to win it will take advantage of every area they are allowed.

One of my favorite spec. classes I have seen is the Pro7 and Spec7 series. These events feature wheel to wheel racing with 1st gen Mazda RX-7's which are not only fun to drive and easily available, they also happen to be quite cheap. When it comes to spec racing on a budget I can make the suggestion to look for a car that has already had some of the prep work done. Things like roll cages, racing seats, harnesses, and other safety mods are the necessary items that we do not want to compromise on but also tend to be some of the most expensive items on these cars.

Spec7 is not the only cheap spec class you will find out there in fact there are plenty that may even run strictly in your local region so get out there and look and have fun!

In my experience, autocross can be a very fun and exciting sport. I have participated in several events in my local area. I found the hobby to be very addictive as well.

Out of all my other hobbies, I think this one is the best "bang for the buck" as far as thrills go with your car. Everybody can participate. Every car (some clubs have exceptions to this though like no SUV's, no Trucks) can race. The nice thing about this kind of race is that you are competing against others in your class usually defined by the SCCA, however, you are on the course alone so there is minimal chance of hitting other cars.

The hardest part about autocross (aside from learning how to race) in my opinion is finding the right car. Sure, you can use a daily driver, but that is not recommended if you are going to participate in several events a year. Autocross can create wear on the tires and other components very quickly and can get expensive very fast. I would recommend to get a vehicle that you can use for autocross. This can be a "trailer car" or a car that you can still drive on the road, but use only for this hobby.

There are 4 key components to consider when selecting a car for autocross:

1) What type of car to get
2) The Price of the car
3) The overall condition of the vehicle (if used)
4) Aftermarket upgrades/modifications

WHAT TYPE OF CAR TO GET FOR AUTOCROSS:

For autocross racing, some people would assume that the car has to be very powerful, small, 2 doors and modified. This is not entirely accurate. While that type of car would be nice, it is not required to be competitive in autocross.

Remember that most autocross events and clubs have the cars grouped in to some sort of class. The club I participate with follow the SCCA Class guidelines. The classes help group the cars so the same "level" of vehicles can remain competitive within each class.

This is done to avoid the "biggest and fastest is best" state of thought. It would be unfair to put a heavily modified Porsche GT3 up against a stock Ford Focus. This is why they do that.

So, to pick the right car for autocross, you would probably want a coupe or convertible FIRST if possible. Sedans can work well too, but some sedans are not geared for modifications, although, the sport sedans of today are really starting to take over.

Manual transmission would be recommended, however, if you have an automatic that is OK too. You may want to consider trading it for a manual in the future to remain competitive. Again, there are still "sport shift" type automatics out there that are getting better and better each day.

Ideally, you would also want a rear-wheel drive car for autocross. RWD cars typically provide better control and handling in most cases. I know some enthusiasts out there will disagree with me, but that's OK. On the other hand, I have used several front-wheel drive cars that run with the best of them.

PRICE:

The price of buying a car for autocross is always the factor for me. I, like many others, cannot afford an expensive vehicle for autocross. There are, however, those that can afford it and price is still something for them to consider.

The $0-$5000 range:

This is the range most of us beginners want to start. Of course, free is GOOD, but consider the 3rd component (overall condition) when this option comes to mind. Several cars that can perform well and have a lot of upgradable options are the following:

1989-1997 Mazda Miata - Very nice power to weight ratio. It is VERY popular at autocross. 1979-1991 Mazda RX7 - Fast small car, handles well. Many upgrades available. 1989-1998 Nissan 240sx - Several aftermarket upgrades, handles very well. 1990-1999 BMW 3 Series - Very versatile car. You can find very nice models in this range now. 1988-2000 Honda Civic/CRX - I have seen several models compete well in autocross. 1984-1999 Toyota MR2 - Low center of gravity, great performance, mid engine. 1990-1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse/Eagle Talon - Many upgrades, some models Turbo AWD. 2000-2007 Ford Focus - Very competitive cars. SVT models available in price range. 1997-2003 VW Golf - Hatchbacks always like autocross. VR6 models available in range. 1990-1999 Acura Integra - Like the Civic, very competitive with many upgrades out there.

There may be a few more cars that I missed that fall under this price range. The method I use to hunt for cars can vary depending on the type I am looking for. I will use local classified ads, Craigslist. I will also use the bigger car searches and expand my general "hunting" area. I have successfully found great cars using VEHIX, AutoTrader as well as Government Auction Sites.

But what about the autocross cars above the $5000 range? Well, I am glad you are think that because I am about to list them below.

If you have some money to work with and want to get something newer, you can consider the following cars:

The $5,001-$20,000 range:

This range can include newer cars as well as pre-owned cars that are no more than a few years old. Remember, cars usually depreciate very fast, so as the years go by, some of the newer cars can be within reach for less money and are great for autocross. The cars below come to mind in this range:

1998-Current Mazda MX-5 - Still same basic car, but more power as they got newer. 2003-Current VW Golf - Even more modified than the previous versions, compete well. 1992-1997 Mazda RX7 - 3rd Gen is twin-turbo and can compete in autocross. 1992-2006 BMW M3 - M3's are designed for racing. Some newer models will fall in this range. 1998-2003 BMW M5 - M5's are very powerful and compete in their class well. 1994-Current Ford Mustang/Cobra - Very versatile car. Competes well in class. 1994-2002 Camaro/Firebird - Competes well in class. Many autocross upgrades. 2007-Current Mazda Mazdaspeed3 - Turbo, hatchback, competes well in autocross. 2003-2008 Nissan 350z - Great autocross car, very popular on the track. Special Autocross Kit cars such as the V6 Stalker fall in this range as well.

Now, this price range can vary in vehicles. A lot of these cars are still new and may require loans to purchase them.

The $20,001 spectrum will consist of some of the current-day models as well as the obvious "super cars" we all respect such as the Corvette, Viper, Porsche, Ferrari, Lotus and others. I will not include a list for those because if you are buying one of those for an autocross car, you did your research.

OVERALL CONDITION OF THE VEHICLE (USED):

When buying a second car for autocross, treat it like when you are buying your daily driver car. You want the car to be relatively free of major problems. Autocross racing can put stress on the car's frame, the suspension, the brakes, the tire and the overall body of the car.

You want to be sure that the car has not been in any major accidents. Frame repair or frame damage can be very dangerous mixture when you autocross. That is the MOST important thing to check for when buying a car for autocross. I have experienced and used the service by Experian called AutoCheck. They offer an unlimited number of VIN checks for one of their service options and the price is way better than the other services out there. I have used it when shopping and comes in very handy when you are checking the history of a vehicle.

The next important item to check on the car is major component problems such as smoke coming out of the back of the exhaust, major oil leaks (small leaks are expected on most used cars) slight/major overheating of the engine. Autocross is outside and you push the car to the limit. You want the major components to be in the best shape they can be. The mentioned problems can leave you stranded at the track if you do not look out for them.

I usually have some expectation to do minor repair or preventive repairs on my vehicles when I am buying to autocross them. As I stated above, small oil/fluid leaks are "OK" and can usually be fixed very easily. Small leaks tell us that the car is just used and may not be suffering from the leak as a result. Large/major leaks tell us the car may have been neglected by the previous owner and may carry residual problems unseen at the moment. When looking at a car, start it up, drive it around with the A/C engaged (even if it doesn't work). When you are finished with the test drive, leave it idling while you walk around the car continuing to inspect it. If the car has an overheating problem, often this is the time it will show. This tip has helped me avoid several beautiful autocross cars that had an overheating problem.

Belts and hoses are my most frequent "preventive" repair I do, even if they are not a problem. It is always best to know when an important component has been replaced rather than to "guess" and trust the previous owner. Water pumps, too, fall in this category sometimes.

One thing people always check when buying a used car are the tires. Yes, this is important for an autocross car, but not to see how "good" the tires are, but to see if the car needs an alignment. Autocross is about handling and you need to be sure the car's stock "handling" ability is where it should be.

Why not worry about the tires? Well, tires should be one thing to consider buying for your autocross car to begin with, so the existing tires should be removed anyway. Tires are probably the most bought wear item an autocross member will buy. A lot of autocross racers will bring a set of tires for racing, one for driving home (those who do not use a trailer) and some will even bring spares for the racing tires. This is so common that Tire Rack offers tires just for autocross. I have used them and they are the best place to get tires for this.

AFTERMARKET MODIFICATIONS FOR AUTOCROSS:

If you ever look into the aftermarket world of the auto industry, you know that there are literally thousands of places to look and buy. I will list a few spots that most people do not think to look, but surprisingly have things for the autocross fans.

First and foremost, autocross cars do NOT always need major upgrades to be competitive. A driver can use a stock vehicle and compete against fellow stock vehicles and remain competitive. Once you start to modify or upgrade heavily, you may start to move into different classes and compete with other cars that are equally modified. Keep that in mind when you want to change something.

Usually, I say modify the easy things first: Intake, exhaust and general tune ups. Most autocross drivers do not go far from that. These should be the first things you try to upgrade while you participate in autocross to get the most performance out of your vehicle.

If you decide to go further to be more competitive, my next recommendation would be suspension and body roll modifications. Please remember, certain upgrades in this area may change your class. Be sure to check your club or groups rules with these modifications.

Usually, the fastest upgrade to an autocross car would be front and rear strut tower bars/braces. They are usually inexpensive to buy and easy to install. They are also very modular meaning that when you buy these, they will work with other suspension components in place (usually). This modification helps stiffen the car's suspension and frame and helps with cornering.

The next modification recommendation would then be the front and rear sway bars and links. These parts also help the body roll while cornering and handling and can sometimes be modular to the suspension system as a whole.

The final suspension upgrade is usually the most expensive: The struts (shocks/springs). This upgrade usually works well with the above items, but ads more stiffness, more response to the handling and sometimes lower the car overall for a lower center of gravity.

Once you have modified the entire suspension, my next recommendation would be to upgrade the brakes (at least the pads). This will help your stopping ability for those moments where a tap of the brake is needed during a lap. Please keep in mind that high performance brake pads usually wear much quicker than OEM.

One of the last things I recommend to upgrade is the tires. Now, I'm not saying that you should not FIRST buy new tires when you autocross, but I am saying not to UPGRADE them to an autocross/race tire just yet. Most autocross enthusiasts will tell you to get used to the stock/regular tires on your car first.

Once you get used to stock type tires, modifying them to a race tire or softer tire will actually improve your lap times (that's the theory anyway).

One last note. I recommend replacing the fluids in your car with as many synthetics as you can. Synthetic fluids have higher heat resistance and can take the intense moments you will be putting on the car during the autocross laps.

Some of the places I have bought aftermarket modifications and upgrades are from the following: Tires- Tire Rack, General maintenance items/Oil/Filters/Performance, MyAutocross Store, Auto Warehouse

Model and make specific forums are also a great place to find parts for your specific car. Usually people on those forums are experts with that model and are constantly modifying it and selling the used items.

As the American housing market continues to sink, the Federal government may implement another rescue plan to offer incentives and guarantees for loan modification programs. The new plan would serve as an inducement to lenders to modify home loans for delinquent borrowers facing foreclosure. Foreclosure is time consuming and costly for banks, and continue to place downward pressure on the housing market.

FDIC Chairman Sheila Bair told a Senate panel that a proposed plan is in the works to offer federal loan guarantees and credit enhancements to encourage lenders to offer loan modification programs. The current voluntary program is not working and lenders are continuing to fall behind. Realty Trac announced that foreclosure filings in the third quarter were 71% higher than the same period last year.

Declining to mention any specific dollar figure for the program, it has been reported that somewhere around $40 billion was being considered for funding. Under the terms of the $700 billion banking bailout passed earlier, the Treasury Department can use loan guarantees and credit enhancements to facilitate loan modifications to prevent avoidable foreclosures. The government could establish standards for loan modifications and provide guarantees for loans meeting those standards. The incentive is to provide long term, sustainable loans for homeowners to prevent future defaults.

The challenge has been that the loan servicers who work directly with the homeowners on behalf of the investors, have competing interests that impede loan workouts. Mortgage investors stand to lose money on loan modifications and have been reluctant to offer any wide ranging loan modification programs. Chairman Bair's proposal of federal loan guarantees would provide incentives to overcome the aversion to loan modification programs by investors. These guarantees and incentives would increase the likelihood of lenders choosing loan modifications over foreclosures. Foreclosure is a costly and time consuming process that results in a continued downward pressure on the housing market values.

Loan modifications are currently voluntary and at the discretion of each lender. Distressed borrowers have complained that help has been slow in coming, with many lenders inundated with applications from homeowners seeking to modify their loan. Typically a loan modification program will employ one or more of these options to arrive at an affordable monthly payment:

* Rates reduced to as low as 2%
* Payments featuring interest only options
* Principal reduction to 95% of the homes current market value
* Extending or fixing the initial "teaser rate"
* Late fees waived
* Waive prepayment penalties

Main Street balked at the billion dollar bailout for Wall Street, however using some of those funds to directly help homeowners is a policy that most Americans would support. Sheila Bair has stated that the Federal government is working with the Treasury Department to reduce the number of foreclosures and keep people in their homes. She believes the government needs to get involved to create a streamlined process to modify troubled home loans. The Treasury Department has confirmed that loan guarantees were possible but would not say when a plan would be ready.
